As we pause this week to reflect on Remembrance Day and honour the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve, we are reminded that acts of service take many forms—both at home and abroad.
Captain Aaron Niles of the Royal Canadian Air Force recently demonstrated that spirit of service in a deeply personal way. Through Ruck for a Cure, Aaron marched 16.4 km from CFB Trenton to Belleville General Hospital, carrying a 30-pound ruck to symbolize the heavy burden carried by patients and families facing cancer.
Last week, Aaron returned to Belleville General Hospital for a cheque presentation, marking the conclusion of this year’s Ruck for a Cure, which raised an incredible $5,010 in support of local cancer care through the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic.
Aaron was joined by his younger brother Sean, who continues his courageous fight against cancer, his nephew Parker who accompanied him on the march, and Major Shawna Mackey of CFB Trenton. Members of the Belleville General Hospital Foundation and the Quinte Health leadership team were proud to be there to thank Aaron for his inspiring efforts and the meaningful impact of his fundraising.
“Aaron’s dedication to his family, his community, and to the cause of cancer care is truly inspiring,” said Amanda Grydziuszko of the Belleville General Hospital Foundation. “As we honour our military members this Remembrance Day, we are especially grateful for those, like Aaron, who continue to serve our communities in so many important ways.”
Since its inception, Ruck for a Cure has embodied strength, compassion, and community spirit, values that continue to unite the Quinte region in support of local cancer patients and their families.
Thank you, Captain Niles, for leading with heart and reminding us what it means to serve.
