Highlighting the broad reach and deep impact of community-driven initiatives, the Belleville General Hospital Foundation’s (BGHF) recent Camp4Cancer Lottery drew participants and support from across the province. Langa Mtimkulu from Kanata is the latest winner, traveling to Belleville to claim her significant prize, underscoring the widespread commitment to advancing cancer care.

“Every ticket purchased in our lotteries extends the boundaries of support for cancer care, bridging distances and uniting us in a common cause,” said Steven Cook, Executive Director of BGHF. “With nearly one in two people diagnosed with cancer at some point, it’s imperative we provide access to first-class care close to home. This lottery is vital in making that a reality for the entire Quinte catchment.”

The funds raised through the Camp4Cancer Lottery are crucial for equipping the Dr. Douglas McIntosh Oncology Clinic with cutting-edge medical equipment and supporting access to drugs not funded by Cancer Care Ontario. This ensures that patients receive the best possible care locally, minimizing the need for long-distance travel during difficult times.

Upon receiving her prize, Langa Mtimkulu shared her initial disbelief, “I was so surprised when I got the call—I thought it was a joke at first. Winning feels surreal and knowing that my participation helps provide crucial cancer care makes it even more special.”

Catherine Cox, Sales Manager at Carl Cox RV, where the prize was collected, emphasized the personal and communal impact of the initiative. “As a family and a business, supporting cancer care is close to our hearts. Partnering with BGHF allows us to contribute meaningfully, helping to tackle a disease that affects us all in some way.”

Wayne Sheppard, BGHF Board Chair commented on the significance of the event, “It’s heartening to witness firsthand the difference we’re making together. These funds allow us to equip our clinic with the latest technologies and support services that make all the difference in patient care and outcomes.”

This year’s BGHF lotteries have not only brought fun and excitement to the community but have also proven effective in funding the fight against cancer, raising over $1.6m since inception. The continued success of these initiatives is a testament to the generosity and solidarity of supporters across Ontario.
