Third Annual Pink in the Rink Hockey Fundraiser to Benefit Oncology at Belleville General Hospital.
On February 9th, youth hockey players from Eastern Ontario, alongside their families and fans, gathered at CAA Arena in Belleville to play with purpose – raising funds and awareness for cancer care in the community.
What started in 2023 as a grassroots initiative by Amy Harder and Matt Longo has grown into a powerful annual tradition. This year, Pink in the Rink raised $4,205 for the Belleville General Hospital Foundation’s (BGHF) oncology fund, bringing the three-year total to $12,389. Participating teams included the U12AA Belleville Bulls and Northumberland Nighthawks, as well as the U12A Belleville Bulls and Oshawa Generals.
“Seeing how this event has grown and the incredible support we’ve received from our Belleville Minor Hockey Association community is truly inspiring,” said Amy Harder. “Each year, more families, players, and local businesses come together to make a real difference for cancer care.”
The event’s emotional core was highlighted by a heartfelt video displayed on the jumbotron, where players dedicated their game to loved ones impacted by cancer. Each matchup featured a ceremonial puck drop, honouring cancer survivors and those currently battling the disease. Stories of local heroes Clinton McEvoy and Amy Collens inspired both donations and determined play from the young athletes.
“The success of Pink in the Rink is a testament to the strength and generosity of our hockey family,” said Matt Longo. “From our sponsors to the volunteers, players and fans, everyone plays a crucial role in making this event such a meaningful experience.”
This event would not be possible without the overwhelming generosity of sponsors and contributors. The Harder Family, Quinte Paint & Wallpaper, and Farnsworth Construction Ltd. provided vital game-day sponsorships. CT Photography captured every unforgettable moment, while the Bennett Family’s handcrafted Adirondack chair became a highlight of the raffle. Belle Balloons transformed the arena with vibrant pink décor, and GoTeamWork.com helped unite players and fans in a striking display of solidarity. Ben Quaiff Media produced moving “Who Are You Playing For” video introductions, while Anita Halfpenny’s stirring rendition of the national anthem set the perfect tone for the game. The Stapley Family’s generous donation of warm-up t-shirts for the Belleville Bulls strengthened the team’s unity off the ice.
A special thank you to the Ottawa Senators and Belleville Senators for delivering a pro-level experience at CAA Arena and supporting the event’s mission to raise awareness and funds for cancer care in the local community. The steadfast commitment of the Belleville Minor Hockey Association Board of Directors is also instrumental in driving the event’s continued growth and lasting impact.
With each passing year, Pink in the Rink amplifies its impact, showcasing the powerful partnership between sport and community in the fight against cancer. Organizers are already looking ahead to making next year’s event even bigger.
