Wynand Bekker, owner and pharmacist, with representatives from his Shoppers Drug Mart stores at Dundas Street East and Sidney Street, Belleville presented a cheque for $20,100 to the Belleville General Hospital Foundation today. All funds are directed to the Oncology Department at BGH.
In 2018, both Shoppers Drug Mart locations hosted fundraisers in support of the SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Growing Women’s Health initiative. The campaign allows store teams, employees, customers, and patients to play an active role in their community while raising funds for this very worthy cause. Mr. Bekker remarked, “We donate funds to oncology at BGH because we know that so many families struggle with cancer. Women in our community are directly affected not only as patients themselves, but perhaps as a family member to a patient. We believe that donating to oncology will benefit the entire community.”
Visits to the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic increased in 2018 to more than 8000 total patient visits. An increase is anticipated this year based on trending. Breast, Colon, Lung, Prostate, Melanoma, and Lymphoma cancers are the main diseases treated at BGH. A Cancer patient’s journey often includes other departments such as X-Ray, CT Scan, MRI, Echocardiogram, Bone Scan, Nuclear Medicine, Ultra Sound, Pharmacy, Lab, Medical Day Clinic, social worker, Dietary, Occupational and physio therapy, and homecare. “Every gift matters in the fight against cancer and your donation makes possible great strides for our patients and families we treat. Generous donations like yours support our mission of excellence. Thank you for all you do on our behalf of our patients and their families.” Anke Gilmour, Manager, Oncology
BGH Foundation Board Chair, Patricia Guernsey, stated, “We are very grateful to Mr. Bekker, and the teams at Shoppers Drug Mart, for this generous donation and their ongoing support. We hope that someday there will be a cure for cancer and we won’t have to fundraise for this, but in the meantime, we are grateful to community partners like Shoppers Drug Mart that continue to donate to their local hospital to make care better.”
Funds, in 2018, were raised through initiatives, such as purchasing a leaf, butterfly, apple, or bird that were prominently displayed in the stores last fall, raffles, silent auctions, book sales, monthly euchre games, a Blue Jays raffle, dinner at The Dugout restaurant, ‘Celebrity Server’ Night at Boston Pizza, a bake sale, and their annual ‘Tree of Life’ baseball tournament.
