Belleville General Hospital set for ICU Expansion after $500,000 donation.
Additional patient rooms expected to cost $4m
May 6, 2019 – Plans to expand the region’s Intensive Care Unit at Belleville General Hospital are currently underway following a substantial donation from The Parrott Foundation. The organization, with a long history of supporting causes in the region, agreed to partially fund the project after hospital Executives aired concern at the lack of availability of ICU beds.
The current physical design of the BGH ICU is 14 separate patient care rooms. Under the current design, patient volume can extend to 17 beds during moderate surge, a situation that has become the norm for the hospital.
Recent operational assessments found that Quinte Health Care (QHC) serves an older population than the provincial norm with more than 23% of residents aged 65 and over. This fact, coupled with a high prevalence of COPD within the region has increased pressure on health care services leading to alternative options needing to be explored.
Mary Clare Egberts, President and CEO of QHC called the plan, ‘the first component of a regional initiative that will see us improve healthcare for the sickest patients arriving at the hospital.’
Construction of the additional 4 rooms is expected to commence in the Fall 2019, providing plans sent to the Ministry are approved this summer. The proposal seeks to offer a permanent solution to the overcapacity issues suffered in recent years which have meant additional pressure on the hospital’s emergency department and patient flow endeavors.
With patients transferred to BGH from across the district, the ICU expansion is a regional initiative drawing on the support of all 4 hospital Foundations within the QHC network. Speaking on behalf of BGHF, Executive Director Steven Cook commented, ‘This is a priority project, which will benefit patients from across the County. QHC Hospitals, like most in Ontario, continue to experience unprecedented patient volumes. Last year the number of patients cared for at QHC hospitals increased by 13,000 compared to 2 years ago. Upgrades to our infrastructure are imperative and donations like this are crucial.’
A project of this magnitude requires the generosity of many community partners and QHC is appealing to donors to help support the expansion plans. As the Regional Secondary Hospital BGH sits at the heart of QHC’s health network. Collectively QHC hospitals treated over 315,000 patients last year, with over 109,500 emergency department visits, 154,000 diagnostic exams and over 24,000 surgeries.
The Belleville General Hospital Foundation’s mission is to inspire community giving at all levels to improve health care outcomes for the people of Quinte through support for BGH.
