Doctors there are hoping the foundation will raise enough money to buy a portable ultrasound scanner to help them deliver life-saving drugs in a safer, faster, easier way.

The foundation is trying to raise $131,000 for the ultrasound, two defibrillators to restore a heart’s natural rhythm and a computerized drug dispenser.

Donations that people give make a huge life-or-death difference here in the ICU, It’s where the sickest, most critically-ill patients are, and as a donor this is where you get the biggest bang for your buck.

The ultrasound is needed to guide doctors as they insert needles into blood vessels. Typical uses include treating patients with sepsis (overwhelming infection), severe breathing problems and heart attacks. Those situations may require quick injections of drugs.

Doctors can sometimes borrow an ultrasound unit from the emergency department. Without it, they have to make “an educated guess” based on anatomy. This unit could be used daily.
