Charlotte Sills – A Legacy Donor
No one knew until her death in 1961 that Mrs. Charlotte Sills had left a share of her estate to the Belleville General Hospital. A total of $3 million was eventually received with $2 million designated for, “the construction and maintenance of a convalescent home.”
It took many years to receive all the necessary government approvals and construction of the new wing didn’t start until March 2007. In that time the original bequest grew to many times its original value; enough to fund the community share of building costs for the new Charlotte Sills Wing of QHC Belleville.
The Sills Wing houses Complex Continuing Care and Rehab Units, The Children’s Treatment Centre and Mental Health Services will also be relocating to the fifth floor of the wing in the near future.
